V.P. Singh has made some fantastic demands on reservation. He wants reservation in media, judiciary. Who knows he may demand that 27% of the news items should be on OBCs and 27% of the letters to editors should be from OBCs. Linking concessions to private sector with quotas is another suggestion. CPI can rename itself as Casteist Party of India. That will be more appropriate. They want to implement reservation in one go. V.P. Singh can expect some political mileage out of such demands. But that will be too short lived to be useful in U.P. elections. The ‘surgery’ suggested by him would make the institutions sick. Perhaps that is what he wants.
If referendum is a way of finding solutions let us have a referendum in Gujarat about Modi and about Narmada issue. Will Singh accept the results of the referendum ? Will the pseudo – secularists accept the verdict of the people and stop criticizing Modi. If a referendum is the right way to arrive at a policy can we extend it to issue like Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and Uniform Civil Code.
V.P. Singh is much more than a pseudo – secularist, he is a supporter of the New Caste Order which is an euphemism for OBC hegemony in all walks of life and in all institutions. In that way I consider him to be as dangerous as the supporters of Hindutva. V.P. Singh does not believe in equality and wants caste to be sole deciding factor. His fellow travelers are no different. Hence
their intentions mirror that of Sangh Parivar. Both have no faith in the principle of equality.
Both practise a crude form of identity politics. In any case it is a consolation that his fellow will not become Prime Minister again. It will be better if his latest political adventure is defeated in the forthcoming polls. Let him spend more time in trying his hand in painting and poetry. Let him not add more disharmonies to the society. He supports the cause of poor and homeless. That is fine. But problems come when he still thinks in terms of Mandalisation of the country. Gentle men like him are capable of doing more damage than good to society, because of their perverted perspectives and myopic thinking. As a person his integrity and honesty may be beyond doubt but as a political leader I consider him to be someone who has not gone beyond caste-based perspective.
